Hand Reflexology

The
healing art of Hand Reflexology has been known for thousands of years,
used by Egyptians, Chinese and Indian people. It is a very gentle
therapy and has helped to improve the quality and well being of people’s
lives.
Hand
Reflexology
is an
Holistic therapy that balances the whole body, physically, mentally and
spiritually.
The
ancient Egyptians gave hand reflexology the same importance as the feet,
while in
modern times,
Dr.
William Fitzgerald and Eunice Ingram have both researched and worked
with hands to demonstrate noteworthy results.
Background
When
early man developed and stood up on his feet, the thumb became free to
use. The development of the thumb enabled the human race to manipulate
the world around them.
As
children we use our hands to explore the world around us and this helps
to develop the brain. The more children are encouraged to use their
hands the greater their development.
In
Japan the elderly are encouraged to practice origami to help with mental
alertness in old age.
We
use our hands to articulate our thoughts and to influence others. The
hands can be used to compensate our inability to express ourselves and
when we get angry or frustrated our hand gestures become more
exaggerated, we throw up our hands in despair.
Hands
too can soothe the touch of the hand on a shoulder can help to calm some
one down.
The
hands become the extension of our body language. How do we hold our
hands? Do we curl them up or are they open to the world.
Being
aware of other people’s hands helps us to be able to understand them
more.
Six
meridian lines run though the hands and problem areas in the body can be
seen along these lines as the body throws off congestion and toxins.
A
blue thumb may indicate lung congestion, a red thumb emotional upsets.
Pressing a point 2 inches above the wrist line on the inside of the arm
can help stimulate sexual energy, also pulling and rotating the fingers
can release pent-up energy.
Stimulating and rotating the fingers on both hands can help create a
balance in the bodies systems. The triple heater meridian represented by
the ring finger balances the cross zones within the body, affecting many
major organs of the body.
The
relationship between the palm of the hand and the fingers can tell us a
great deal about our personality. A square palm may indicate a practical
personality, long fingers could indicate an artistic and sensitive
person. If the fingers and palm are equal then a balanced person is
indicated
The
texture, flexibility, shape and tone of the hand can tell us so much
about a person and all these observations are taken into account by a
reflexologist.
In
reflexology imbalances can be detected in the physical body even before
reflexes are checked.
Experience shows that work on the hands does have some advantages and
working them makes a good complement to foot reflexes.
The
theory is the same as for the feet The right hand refers to the right
side of the body and the left hand to the left side. However, it is
important to remember when the hand is turned over the thumb is on the
side of the “big toe” you just have to remember it is in zone one.
The
techniques are different; the thumb is used on the palm of the hand and
the index finger used on the top and to work between the fingers. It is
important to remember the skin on the top of the hand is much finer than
on the feet.
