Indian Head Massage

The benefits of Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has several advantages over other therapeutic techniques, including:

        No medium is required

Clothing does not need to be removed

Ideal for the shy or nervous

Ideal for the elderly, disabled or arthritic

        Versatile

        Economical

        Little space is needed

Because of the advantages, it is also an ideal therapy or:

        An introduction to massage

        Use in the work place

        Nursing or residential care

        Pregnancy

        Stress management

        Demonstration work

The physical benefits of working on the face, neck, scalp and shoulders, are that it produces a relaxation within the muscles, breaking down fibrous adhesions, releasing toxins from tense muscles and relieving neck and shoulder stiffness.

It also increases oxygen to the muscles, stimulates lymphatic flow, encourages the growth of the hair and helps relieve eye strain, tinnitus, jaw ache, sinus congestion and insomnia.

Psychologically, it creates a sense of calm and tranquillity, improving concentration and alertness and reducing anxiety.  It also helps relieve mental tiredness, edginess and depression.

Contra-Indications

As with other therapies there are a number of contra-indications which must be considered before application:

        High temperature/illness/fever

        Any recent accidents/injuries/surgery/whip lash

        Infectious diseases

        Skin infections/inflammations

Localised dilation of vessels - Aneurosa (commonly the artery in the temple/forehead of the elderly)

        Intoxication

All standard contra-indications apply for massage therapies.

Conditions which require care include Osteoporosis, frailty, chronic fatigue, spondylitis or spondylitis in the neck - avoid and use gentle movements only, painful cysts, psoriasis - this condition is not contagious but caution should be taken.

Champissage attacks stress immediately by accessing the physical effects.  It also is an aid to better relaxation and sleep, the lack of which is often a common reason for stress related illnesses, which may lead to more serious mental breakdown.

Stress is actually not a bad thing, as increased pressure can lead to greater achievements. However it can turn into a serious problem if it is allowed to continue over a long period of time.  Positive stress can prepare you for action and motivates one to cope with everyday situations.  Excessive stress is more harmful, and can lead to heart, respiratory and digestive disorders, tension, allergies and mental disorders.   Continual stress can led to a more serious and long term mental illness.

The Physical effects of stress on the body are headaches, indigestion, raised blood pressure, neck-ache, backache, muscle tension, addictions, constipation, irritable bowel and impotence.

The Psychological effects are tiredness, anxiety, phobias, anger, depression, poor concentration, low self esteem, a sense of hopelessness, tearfulness.

Massaging the head encourages the supply of oxygen to the brain and aids the reduction of stress.  Oxygen helps you to think clearly.  Oils can be used to nourish the hair and scalp
