The
physical benefits of working on the face, neck, scalp and shoulders, are
that it produces a relaxation within the muscles, breaking down fibrous
adhesions, releasing toxins from tense muscles and relieving neck and
shoulder stiffness.
It also
increases oxygen to the muscles, stimulates lymphatic flow, encourages
the growth of the hair and helps relieve eye strain, tinnitus, jaw ache,
sinus congestion and insomnia.
Psychologically, it creates a sense of calm and tranquillity, improving
concentration and alertness and reducing anxiety. It also helps relieve
mental tiredness, edginess and depression.
Contra-Indications
As with other therapies there are a number of
contra-indications which must be considered before application:
High temperature/illness/fever
Any recent accidents/injuries/surgery/whip lash
Infectious diseases
Skin infections/inflammations
Localised dilation of vessels - Aneurosa (commonly the artery in
the temple/forehead of the elderly)
Intoxication
All standard contra-indications apply for massage therapies.
Conditions which require care include Osteoporosis, frailty, chronic
fatigue, spondylitis or spondylitis in the neck - avoid and use gentle
movements only, painful cysts, psoriasis - this condition is not
contagious but caution should be taken.
Champissage attacks stress immediately by accessing the physical
effects. It also is an aid to better relaxation and sleep, the lack of
which is often a common reason for stress related illnesses, which may
lead to more serious mental breakdown.
Stress is actually not a bad thing, as increased pressure can lead to
greater achievements. However it can turn into a serious problem if it
is allowed to continue over a long period of time. Positive stress can
prepare you for action and motivates one to cope with everyday
situations. Excessive stress is more harmful, and can lead to heart,
respiratory and digestive disorders, tension, allergies and mental
disorders. Continual stress can led to a more serious and long term
mental illness.
The Physical effects of stress on the body are headaches,
indigestion, raised blood pressure, neck-ache, backache, muscle tension,
addictions, constipation, irritable bowel and impotence.
The Psychological effects are tiredness, anxiety, phobias, anger,
depression, poor concentration, low self esteem, a sense of
hopelessness, tearfulness.
Massaging the head encourages the supply of oxygen to the brain and aids
