Indian Head Massage

Massage is probably one of the most pleasant and satisfying activities you can take part in.  The power of skilful hands can remove stress and pain and leave a sense of calm and pleasure

Massage has always played an important role in the Asian subcontinents, and, used with herbs, spices and aromatic oils, can encourage the natural healing ability of the body.

In India, babies are often massaged daily from birth to encourage and maintain health.  By the time they reach three years old they are massaged once or twice a week, and from the age of six they begin to massage members of their family, and thus massage becomes an important part of family life.

Indian Champissage grew from this tradition of family massage and has been practised for over 1,000 years.  Originally developed by women using oils according to their season, it was believed that regular Head Massage kept the hair strong, healthy and in a beautiful lustrous condition.

The skills of massage have evolved from generation to generation, and become such a part of daily life that a visit to the barber does not just mean a hair cut, but a massage as part of the treatment.  These massages differ from those of the women in that they were more invigorating scalp massages and would leave the client refreshed and stimulated.  Massages can also be seen carried out on the street, in markets, etc., as it is a therapy which does not necessitate the removal of clothes or the use of oils.

The last twenty years has seen the treatment being extended from just the hair and scalp to the face, neck and arms.  The back and shoulder, which are common areas of stress and tension, are gently and firmly massaged until pressure simply floats away.

Touch is very important for stimulating the nervous system and promoting healthy physical development.  It is essential for mental and social development and promotes a sense of comfort and communication.

The introduction of the Ayurvedic element within the massage works on the three highest Chakras or energy vortices.  (These are the Crown - Sahasrara: Forehead – Ajna: Throat - Vishuddha).  The principal behind the technique is to balance the body’s energy Chakras by promoting physical and psychological well being and reducing stress.

Headaches are one of the most common stress related conditions and are suffered by 95% of the population at some time or other.  By massaging the face, scalp, neck and shoulders, headaches and eyestrain can be relieved, concentration improved, muscle tension removed , leaving a sense of general well being.  It also helps restore joint movement by stretching and moving the tissues of the neck and shoulders.
