Western Reflexology

In its common sense, reflexology is the science and art of foot massage. However, its’ domain has extended to hand, ear, lower leg... and all outstanding ECIWOs (Embryo Containing the Information of the Whole Organism).

We may claim without exaggeration that reflexology is an important branch of the newly-flourishing natural medicine (or complementary medicine).  It provides all modalities in this big family with sound theoretical basis and rich practical experiences.

It is on this very basis, a new medicine of the twenty-first century, one combining traditional medicine with modern medicine, is taking shape.

Definition of Reflexology

The feet are a microcosm of the body as a whole. All organs, glands, and body parts are laid out in the same way as the body. By stimulating reflex points on the body, it allows deep relaxation so that homeostasis can occur in the body in balance again, allowing it to heal itself naturally.

Reflexology is a holistic approach (i.e): the whole person is considered, not just the displaying symptom which is a fraction of the whole.

Reflexology has ancient (5,000 Egypt) and scientific (physiological /nervous system) roots - it is a valid treatment.

Nerve impulses in the feet are very strong because they are so far away from the head (also in hand).  When you palpate during Reflexology, you clear any congestion. Congestion goes to the feet because of gravity.

It releases energy blockages and stress in the client.

It improves circulation.

It encourages the lymphatic system to get rid of the body's toxins and impurities.

It is a combination of the physical emotional and spiritual.

It cannot harm you.  It cannot cause or spread cancer.

By relaxing the body, it releases natural endorphins (pain killers).

It is not a miracle cure however.  It can also take time to rebalance the body.

There are no pills or drugs involved.  It is non-invasive, a totally natural process.

Reflexology can be regarded as a very important part of preventative health care.

Reflexologists do not diagnose aloud, (although to themselves they do), as it is necessary for appropriate treatment.

It also stimulates people's natural creativity and productivity because it improves mental alertness.

It can be used on young or old, healthy or sick

It improves people’s relationships. When you feel good people around you notice and respond.

Reflexology provides great job satisfaction for the practitioner, which in turn is handed back to the one being treated.

Everyone needs to be in touch with their deepest selves, and experience the peace and well-being that lies within.

Once people are shown the way, they find they can tune more easily into their body’s needs and remember again how to relax and maintain their natural health.

The following definition of reflexology was adopted at the Conference of North American Reflexologists held in 1989 in Denver, Colorado.

"Foot and hand reflexology is based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all body parts.  The physical act of applying specific pressures using thumb, finger and hand techniques performed without oils, lotions or creams results in stress reduction causing a physiological change in the body."
